Money, Material, Mindset | Ludhiana Edition – Practice Within an Industrial City

As part of the ongoing Money, Material, Mindset dialogue across India, the Ludhiana edition of the 26 Cities 2026 series explored the realities of architectural practice within one of Punjab’s most industrious urban centres.

Known for its strong manufacturing economy and entrepreneurial culture, Ludhiana is a city where growth is often driven by practicality and commerce. Within such an environment, architecture evolves differently—shaped by business needs, efficiency, and rapid urban expansion.

For architects practicing here, the context demands a constant negotiation between design ambition and economic realities. We were honoured to have Ar. Rajan Tangri, Ritika Tanwar, Vikram Likhy, Nimrat Bhatia, Varunesh, Arjun Sharma, Sanjay Goel, Khushboo Raheja, Amrita Taneja, Vikas Sharma

The Ludhiana conference focused on honest reflections about navigating professional life in such a context. Rather than presenting only finished projects, the dialogue encouraged speakers to discuss the processes behind them client expectations, material decisions, budget limitations, and the gradual growth of practice.

The discussions highlighted how architects in cities like Ludhiana often operate within highly pragmatic conditions, where communication, adaptability, and strategic thinking become as essential as design itself.

A key thread throughout the session was the relationship between materials and economy. Architects reflected on how cost considerations influence design decisions, often encouraging innovative and locally responsive material choices.

The Ludhiana edition ultimately highlighted how architecture in industrial cities grows through negotiation—between ideas, resources, and the people who bring them together.
