Grand Khalifa Luxury Camp: A Seasonal Camping Retreat in Jaisalmer

Set in the quiet dunes near Jaisalmer, Grand Khalifa Luxury Camp is a luxury camping escape shaped by slow, hustle-free-culture. It is designed as a place to step away from routine and settle into the rhythm of the desert, where even silence feels like part of the experience. The temporary camps come alive during the cooler months (Oct-Mar) when the desert is most welcoming. Tents rest gently on the sand, offering shade and wide views of the dunes stretching into the horizon. Days are a bit longer — marked by soft light, long afternoons, and quiet evenings under open skies. Experience the camp — virtually though — here…

The design of Grand Khalifa Luxury Camp comes from the idea of creating permanence within impermanence. The desert, with its shifting sands and ever-changing beauty, inspired an approach to architecture that is light on the land yet deeply connected to its context.

The camp is not imagined as a permanent structure, but as a seasonal settlement inspired by the nomadic traditions of Rajasthan. Fabric tents, supported by local stone platforms, blur the line between architecture and landscape. They provide shelter while still preserving the openness and silence of the desert.
The core philosophy is about sustainability through reversibility—building only what is essential, using local materials, and keeping interventions minimal. Every design decision reflects respect for nature, climate, and cultural heritage.

Unfiltered Design Challenges

  1. Extreme Climate Conditions:- Designing for the desert’s extremes — intense daytime heat and cold nights — was a major challenge. This was addressed through natural ventilation and shaded verandas that allow airflow while protecting from harsh sunlight.
  2. Seasonal Functionality:- Since the camp operates only between October and March, it needed to be easy to assemble and dismantle. Ensuring durability for elements exposed to sand and wind required careful detailing and thoughtful material choices.
  3. Balancing Luxury with Sustainability:- Creating a sense of comfort and sophistication within a low-impact design was both an aesthetic and functional challenge. The interiors use handcrafted details, earthy tones, and soft lighting to create a subtle and refined sense of luxury.
  4. Remote Location and Logistics:- Construction in Kanoi, near Jaisalmer, meant limited access to materials and labour. The project relied on local artisans and modular construction techniques to manage these challenges.

UnFiltered Features

Private Dunes Experience: Each tent opens directly onto its own stretch of sand dunes, offering uninterrupted views of the desert and sunset.

Seasonal Architecture: The entire camp can be dismantled after the season. The bathroom blocks, built using Jaisalmer stone and lime plaster, remain as permanent elements and double as storage during the off-season.

Local Material Palette: The design highlights yellow Jaisalmer sandstone for platforms and retaining walls, along with lime-plastered surfaces in warm ochre tones that reflect the desert landscape.

Minimal Footprint: The modular and non-invasive design ensures that the natural shape of the dunes remains untouched. The infrastructure is reversible, leaving no lasting impact on the site.

Contextual Aesthetic: The design draws from traditional Rajasthani crafts and desert textures, while the interiors remain minimal and refined — allowing the landscape to take center stage.

Grand Khalifa Luxury Camp is a boutique desert retreat located in the dunes of Kanoi, Jaisalmer. Designed as an exclusive escape, the camp includes seven luxury tents, each offering a close connection to the desert landscape. The project focuses on balancing temporary architecture with timeless local craftsmanship, creating an experience that feels both sustainable and comfortable.

Concept & Design Approach

The camp operates seasonally from October to March, in response to the desert’s climate. During the off-season (April to September), the lightweight tents are dismantled to protect them from extreme heat. The permanent bathroom blocks, made from locally sourced Jaisalmer stone and finished with lime plaster, are used to store tents and furniture during this time.

Each tent is placed on a stone platform, grounding it within the site while slightly elevating it above the sand. The bathrooms are designed in warm yellow tones, reflecting the colors of the desert and maintaining a simple, earthy look. Set within private sand dunes, each tent opens to wide, uninterrupted desert views. Rear verandas connect directly to the dunes, allowing guests to fully experience the landscape—from morning walks to sunset views in golden light.

Sustainability & Local Influence

The project follows a low-impact and reversible design approach, ensuring the land remains undisturbed during the off-season. The use of local materials and traditional building methods reflects the architectural character of Jaisalmer. At the same time, the interiors combine modern comfort with handcrafted details, creating a balanced and grounded experience.
